Hyperbaric Chamber in Miami: What It Is Cleared For, What It Is Not, and How We Use It

Aliestetic runs an OXYPRO hyperbaric chamber in Miami as part of a supervised recovery plan. This page explains what hyperbaric oxygen therapy is actually approved to treat, why aesthetic recovery is not on that list, and what an honest session with us looks like.

What is a hyperbaric chamber session used for after cosmetic surgery?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy means breathing oxygen at a pressure higher than normal air pressure inside a sealed chamber. The FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers for a specific list of medical conditions, and cosmetic surgery recovery is not on that list. In 2021 the FDA issued a consumer warning about chambers being promoted for uses it has not approved. Aliestetic, in Miami, runs an OXYPRO chamber as a supervised wellness session inside a recovery plan, not as a treatment for a diagnosed condition. What patients commonly report is feeling more rested and less heavy afterward. We do not claim that a chamber session shortens surgical healing, improves a surgical result, or treats any disease. Sessions in a post-operative window are scheduled only after the operating surgeon clears them, because pressure changes interact with what was done in the operating room and only that surgeon knows the plan.

Somebody told you the chamber would make you heal faster. Maybe a friend who had surgery last year, maybe a clinic that sells packages, maybe a video. Before you book anything, here is the part those sources usually leave out.

What hyperbaric oxygen therapy actually is

You lie inside a sealed chamber. The chamber is pressurised above normal atmospheric pressure, and you breathe oxygen-enriched air while you are in there. Under pressure, more oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma than normal breathing allows. That is the entire mechanism, and it is real physics.

What it is not is a general-purpose accelerator for whatever is happening in your body.

What it is cleared for, and what it is not

The FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers for a specific list of conditions. Decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain non-healing diabetic wounds, severe anemia, thermal burns, gas gangrene, crush injury, and a small number of others. That list is short and it is medical.

Recovery from elective cosmetic surgery is not on it. Neither is anti-aging, neither is athletic performance, neither is long COVID, and neither are most of the things a chamber gets advertised for. In 2021 the FDA published a consumer warning specifically about hyperbaric chambers being promoted for uses it has not approved, and that warning has not been withdrawn.

We are telling you this on our own service page, which is not the normal commercial move. We do it because a clinic that hides this from you will also hide other things from you, and because you are going to find it out anyway.

Then why does Aliestetic have one?

Because the session is low-risk and supervised, and because a lot of patients in the swollen, heavy…

Because the session is low-risk and supervised, and because a lot of patients in the swollen, heavy weeks after a procedure find an hour of lying still in a quiet chamber genuinely restorative. That is a comfort service and we are comfortable selling a comfort service honestly.

What we will not do is attach a clinical claim to it. Your surgical result comes from the operation, your anatomy, your healing and your compression garment. If a chamber were the variable that decided outcomes, surgeons would prescribe it, and they do not.

When it fits a post-operative plan, and when it does not

The gate is your surgeon, in writing.

The gate is your surgeon, in writing.

Pressure changes are not neutral in a body that has just been operated on. The surgeon who was in the room knows which planes were treated, whether fat was grafted, whether drains are still in, and whether there were any findings that change the plan. Nobody else does. We schedule chamber sessions inside a post-operative window only after that clearance, and we will ask for it before your first session rather than after.

In practice, patients often get cleared for the chamber earlier than for cold exposure, which is why the chamber is frequently booked on its own rather than as part of the full circuit.

What the session is like

You change, you lie down, the chamber pressurises gradually. The sensation you will notice is in your ears, the same as a plane taking off, and you equalise the same way. We show you how before you go in, because ear discomfort is the most common reason a first session is unpleasant and it is almost always avoidable.

Once at pressure, it is quiet. Rest, read, listen to something. The chamber depressurises gradually at the end. Most people describe the hour afterward as calm.

An attendant is present for the session. You are not left alone in a pressurised chamber, at any point.

Who should not do it

Tell us before you book if any of these apply: an untreated collapsed lung, which is an absolute contraindication; any ear, sinus or lung condition; recent ear surgery; a cold, congestion or blocked ears on the day; claustrophobia; high fever; current chemotherapy. Pregnancy and cardiac conditions need a conversation with your physician first.

Disclose your full medical history and your medications at intake. Not because of paperwork, but because the ears and sinuses are the first thing pressure affects and most bad first experiences are preventable with a two-minute conversation.

The chamber is the longest block of our 45-minute wellness and recovery circuit, which also runs a short cryotherapy exposure and LED therapy. It can also be booked on its own.

If what you actually need is help with swelling and the heavy, tight feeling after body contouring, the treatment with the most direct relationship to that is lymphatic drainage, and it is a different service performed by a therapist. If you are trying to work out where a chamber session fits in your first six weeks, the recovery hub lays out the whole calendar procedure by procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy FDA approved?

For specific medical conditions, yes. The FDA has cleared hyperbaric chambers for a defined list that includes decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain non-healing wounds, severe anemia, thermal burns and a handful of others. Recovery from cosmetic surgery is not on that list, and neither are the wellness uses the chamber is most often advertised for. The FDA has publicly warned consumers about chambers being promoted for unapproved uses. We say this on the page because you deserve to know it before you book, not after.

So why offer it at all?

Because a chamber session is a low-risk, supervised comfort service that a lot of patients genuinely value during the weeks when everything feels heavy, and because the alternative to offering it honestly is a market full of clinics offering it dishonestly. What we sell is the session and the supervision. What we do not sell is a promise about your healing.

Will it make me heal faster after liposuction or a BBL?

We are not going to tell you that. The published evidence for hyperbaric oxygen in elective cosmetic recovery is thin, and it is nothing like the evidence base that exists for the cleared indications. Your healing comes from the surgery itself, your anatomy, your compression garment and how closely you follow your surgeon instructions. Anyone telling you a chamber package determines your result is selling.

Can I use the chamber right after surgery?

Only with written clearance from the surgeon who operated on you. Pressure changes are not neutral in a body that has just been through an operation, and the surgeon who was in the room is the only person who knows which planes were treated, whether fat was grafted and whether drains are in place. Bring your post-operative instructions. If you arrive without them we will ask you to get them first.

Who should not use a hyperbaric chamber?

Anyone with an untreated collapsed lung should not enter a chamber at all. Tell us before booking if you have any ear, sinus or lung condition, a recent ear surgery, a cold or congestion on the day, uncontrolled high fevers, claustrophobia, or if you are on chemotherapy. Pressure changes affect the ears and sinuses first, which is where most discomfort comes from and why we teach equalisation before you go in.

What does a session actually feel like?

Quiet and uneventful, which is the point. You lie down, the chamber pressurises gradually, and the main sensation is in your ears, like a plane taking off. You equalise the same way. Once at pressure you can rest, read or listen to something. Pressure comes back down gradually at the end. Most people describe the hour afterward as calm rather than energised.

How long is a session and how many do I need?

Session length depends on which chamber block you are scheduled for, and the block is set after we evaluate you. There is no fixed number of sessions, and any clinic quoting you a closed package before examining you is pricing a product rather than planning care. Patients around a procedure tend to book a short series inside their recovery window; patients using it for general wellness space it out.

Is this a hard chamber or a soft chamber?

The OXYPRO unit we operate is a soft-sided chamber, which is the category most commonly used in wellness settings. Hard-shell multiplace chambers reaching higher pressures are hospital equipment used for the cleared medical indications, and they are a genuinely different service with different supervision requirements. If someone has told you that you need hyperbaric oxygen for a medical condition, that belongs in a hospital hyperbaric unit, not here, and we will tell you so.

Can I combine it with lymphatic drainage?

Many patients do, on separate days, for different reasons. Drainage is manual therapy performed on your body by a therapist to move retained fluid. A chamber session is equipment-based and nobody touches you. They are not substitutes and neither one replaces the garment or your surgeon follow-up.

Do you offer it on its own or only in the circuit?

Both. The chamber is the longest block of our 45-minute wellness and recovery circuit, which also includes a short cryotherapy exposure and LED therapy. It can also be scheduled on its own, which is what most post-operative patients end up doing once their surgeon has cleared them for the chamber but not yet for cold exposure.
