Is whole body cryotherapy safe and does it work?
Whole body cryotherapy means standing in a cabin of very cold dry air, typically for around three minutes. It needs to be said plainly: no whole body cryotherapy device has been cleared or approved by the FDA for any medical condition, and when the agency reviewed the published literature it reported finding very little evidence that cryotherapy is effective for the conditions it is marketed to treat. Documented risks include frostbite, burns, eye injury, and in nitrogen-cooled systems, oxygen displacement inside an enclosed room. Aliestetic, in Miami, runs cryotherapy as a short, supervised wellness exposure with protection on hands, feet and ears, never unattended, and skips it entirely for anyone with open or unhealed incisions, uncontrolled hypertension, significant cardiac or vascular disease, Raynaud phenomenon, cold urticaria or pregnancy. What most people report is a sharp rush of alertness in the minutes afterward. We do not claim it treats disease, reduces fat or improves a surgical result.

On this page1 / 9What whole body cryotherapy is
The cold cabin is the treatment people are most excited to try and the one we say no to most often. Both of those things are true for the same reason.

You step into a cabin, your head stays above the rim, and the cabin fills with very cold dry air for around three minutes. You wear protection on hands, feet and ears. An operator stays with you and talks to you for the whole exposure.
That is the service. There is no needle, no applicator, nothing touching your skin except cold air.

No whole body cryotherapy device has been cleared or approved by the FDA to treat any medical condition. Not one.
When the agency reviewed the published scientific literature, it reported finding very little evidence that whole body cryotherapy is effective for the conditions it is commonly marketed to treat. The FDA also documented the risks: frostbite, burns, eye injury, and in nitrogen-cooled systems, the displacement of oxygen inside an enclosed room.
We are putting this in the middle of our own sales page. If that reads as strange, compare it to the pages you have been reading elsewhere and notice what they left out.

Three minutes in a cabin with a trained operator present, a protocol that keeps the exposure short, and a clinic that will tell you not to do it when you should not do it.
What most people report afterward is a sharp rush of alertness in the following minutes. That is a real and pleasant experience, and it is the honest description of the product. It is not a treatment.

It is not fat reduction. You may be thinking of cryolipolysis, which is an entirely different technology: controlled cooling applied to one area of tissue through an applicator, not a cabin you stand in. They share the word cold and nothing else.
It is not skin tightening. It is not a lymphatic drainage substitute. It will not improve a surgical result.
If fat reduction, skin laxity or post-operative swelling is what brought you here, we have services for each of those and we would rather send you to the right one than take your money for the wrong one.
After surgery: this is the one we hold back
Of everything we offer, cold exposure is the modality with the clearest reason to wait.

Cold over healing tissue, over grafted fat, or on a body that is still actively inflamed is not a neutral event. While incisions are open or still closing, the answer is no. After that, the answer is whatever your operating surgeon says in writing, and not before.
In practice most patients are cleared for the chamber weeks before they are cleared for cold. That is why the 45-minute circuit is routinely run without the cold block early on, and the cold block gets added later.

Tell us at intake about any circulation problem, any nerve condition, any recent surgery, and every medication you take. If you are not sure whether something counts, tell us anyway and let us decide together. If you have been drinking, we will move your appointment.

Cryotherapy is the short middle block of our 45-minute wellness and recovery circuit, between the hyperbaric chamber and LED therapy, and it can also be booked on its own.
If you are here because of post-surgical swelling, the service with the most direct relationship to that is lymphatic drainage, performed by a therapist, and the recovery hub explains when it starts and how many sessions actually make sense.

Free consultation, in person or by video. Tell us your medical history honestly, including medications, and tell us if you are post-operative. If cold is not appropriate for you, we will say so, and the circuit runs without it.
Frequently asked questions
Is whole body cryotherapy FDA approved?
No. No whole body cryotherapy device has been cleared or approved by the FDA to treat any medical condition, and the agency has said so publicly. When the FDA reviewed the published scientific literature it reported finding very little evidence that whole body cryotherapy is effective for the things it gets marketed for. We put this at the top of our own service page because you should hear it from us rather than find it afterward.
Then why do you offer it?
Because a three-minute cold exposure is something a lot of people genuinely enjoy and find alerting, and because the honest version of this service is short, supervised and clear about what it is not. We sell three minutes in a cabin with an operator present. We do not sell a health outcome.
Does cryotherapy burn fat or tighten skin?
No. Whole body cryotherapy is not a fat reduction treatment and it is not a skin tightening treatment. You may be thinking of cryolipolysis, which is a completely different technology that applies controlled cooling to a specific area of tissue through an applicator, not a cabin you stand in. If fat reduction or skin laxity is what you are after, those are different services and we will point you to them instead of selling you cold air.
What are the actual risks?
Frostbite and cold burns, most often on skin that was wet or in contact with metal. Eye injury from cold exposure. Temporary numbness, tingling, redness and irritation. In systems cooled with liquid nitrogen, the nitrogen can displace oxygen in an enclosed room, which is the reason the operator stays in contact with you for the entire exposure and the reason you are never in the cabin alone. These are documented risks, not theoretical ones.
Can I do cryotherapy after cosmetic surgery?
Not while incisions are open or still closing, and not at all without written clearance from the surgeon who operated on you. Cold exposure over healing tissue, over grafted fat, or on a body that is still inflamed is not a neutral event. In practice, patients are usually cleared for the hyperbaric chamber well before they are cleared for cold. If your surgeon has not authorised it, the answer here is no, regardless of what you booked.
Who should never do it?
Do not do whole body cryotherapy if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, significant cardiac or vascular disease, Raynaud phenomenon, cold urticaria or another cold allergy, peripheral neuropathy, or open or unhealed wounds. Tell us about any circulation problem, any nerve condition, any recent surgery and all your medications at intake. If you are unsure, the answer is to ask your physician before booking, not to try it and see.
What does it feel like?
Cold, intense, and short. Dry cold air for about three minutes, with protection on hands, feet and ears, and you talk with the operator the whole time. It is not comfortable and it is not supposed to be. Most people describe the minute after stepping out as a rush of alertness. If you genuinely dislike cold, say so when you book, because the wellness circuit runs perfectly well without it.
Why only three minutes?
Because the risk of cold injury climbs with exposure time and there is no evidence that longer is better. Short, supervised and protected is the only configuration we are willing to run. Any facility willing to leave you in longer or leave you alone is trading your safety for a perception of value.
Do I need to do anything to prepare?
Arrive with dry skin and no lotions or oils, because moisture on skin is where cold burns happen. Remove all jewellery and metal. Wear or bring dry underwear you can move in; we provide the protection for hands, feet and ears. If you have been drinking alcohol, we will reschedule you.
Can I book it on its own?
Yes, and it is also the short middle block of our 45-minute wellness and recovery circuit alongside the hyperbaric chamber and LED therapy. Post-operative patients often end up doing the circuit without the cold block for several weeks, then adding it once their surgeon clears it.
Still not sure you are a candidate?
That is what the first consultation is for. It is free, there is no obligation, and you can come to Miami or start by video if you are travelling in.
